Sydney: Australian law enforcement agencies have intensified action against organised crime, with police in New South Wales and Queensland seizing multiple firearms and significant quantities of illegal drugs during separate operations conducted this week.
In New South Wales, authorities detained a 24-year-old man following the recovery of weapons and narcotics near Sydney. Police said the case began after emergency services responded to a single-vehicle crash in the coastal suburb of San Remo, around 80 kilometres north of Sydney. Witnesses reported seeing a man leave the crash scene carrying a bag, prompting officers to search nearby areas.
During the search, police located two abandoned bags allegedly containing two handguns and large quantities of methamphetamine and other prohibited substances. Investigators later executed a search warrant at a nearby residence, where they reportedly seized additional firearms, ammunition, banned drugs, and equipment associated with drug supply activities.
The suspect was arrested the following day and charged with multiple offences, including large-scale drug supply, possession of suspected criminal proceeds, and unlawful possession of firearms. Authorities said the charges carry severe penalties under Australian law.
In a separate operation in Queensland, police arrested four individuals as part of an investigation into an organised drug network. Search warrants executed at a rural property and a vehicle in Alligator Creek led to the seizure of substantial quantities of cannabis, methamphetamine, and cocaine, along with firearms, ammunition, and large sums of cash.
Police said investigations into both cases are ongoing, as authorities continue efforts to curb illegal drug trafficking and the circulation of firearms across the country.
